The first rule of the Fight Club

 

The Mental Floss blog (one of my favorites) featured an article on 7 Entourages That Changed the World, and Project Mayhem from Fight Club is the only TV- or movie-based entourage that made the cut. (Sorry, Jeremy.)

In the introduction to his book Stranger Than Fiction, Chuck Palahniuk, author of Fight Club, writes: “My pet theory about Fight Club’s success is that the story presented a structure for people to be together. People want to see new ways for connecting.”

Palahniuk modeled the fictional Project Mayhem on his real-life participation in a group called the Cacophony Society.

Roger Ebert's blog

Roger Ebert has a blog on the Chicago Sun-Times Web site. (He calls it a "journal" but the photo posted on the site, pictured above, is titled "ebert_blog.jpg", so the Web folks know it's a damn blog.)

He has some interesting tidbits on the site: Film critics watch between four and 10 movies a week. (Seems like I've been preparing to be a film critic most of my adult life then.) And Citizen Kane is the one movie most reviewers name when asked the inevitable: What's the greatest movie of all time? He gives out too many stars.

But the most interesting article, by far, is the one he posts on "How to Read a Movie." It should be required reading for any student of film. It brings home that if all movies are "moving pictures" then perhaps there is much to discover in stopping the movement and studying one frame at a time (at times).
