Tupelo to Join 12th Manhattan Short Film Festival

The 12th Manhattan Short Film Festival will run in 173 cities (across five continents) - including Tupelo, MS - from Sept. 20 to 27.

The screening of 10 short films will start at 7 p.m. Sept. 24 at the Tupelo Commons Malco, and the event will last about two and a half hours. Viewers will be handed a scoring card and will score all the films. Local votes will be tallied with about 100,000 others from North America, South America, Europe, Asia and Australia. The winner will be announced Sept. 29.

The competition will feature films from the U.S., Sweden, Mozambique, France, Italy, Australia, Israel and the United Kingdom. There are two entries from Spain. The $6 tickets are available in advance at the Tupelo Convention and Visitors Bureau or at Malco beginning at 5:30 p.m. on Sept. 24.

À Nous la Liberté showing for free at Mississippi Museum of Art

On Friday, Feb. 13, the Mississippi Museum of Art will host a free showing of  À Nous la Liberté at 7 p.m. in the Trustmark Grand Hall in Jackson.

René Clair's 1931 classic tells the story of Louis, an escaped convict who becomes a wealthy industrialist. Unfortunately, his past returns (in the form of old jail pal, Émile) to upset his carefully laid plans. Actors include the Dadaist and Surrealist artists Marcel Duchamp and Man Ray.

À Nous la Liberté is brought to you in partnership with the Crossroads Film Society and l'Alliance Française de Jackson in conjunction with Raoul Dufy: A Celebration of Beauty on view at the Mississippi Museum of Art through July 5. Retired businessman to restore historic Meridian theater

Retired businessman Roger Smith says his lifelong interest in movie houses brought him to Meridian and into ownership of the historic Temple Theatre. The Hamasa Temple Shriners sold the theater to Smith for $500,000, according to the Associated Press.

Smith, formerly of Dallas, says he intends to restore the building. The building is listed on the National Register of Historical Places. It was built by the Shriners in the mid-1920s. It is noted for its Moorish revival style architecture and design, popular among Shriners’ Temples, and its remarkable pipe organ.

It was once the only movie theater in Meridian, later being leased by the Saenger chain of theaters for 40 years. In recent years, it has been used for stage productions.

Sci-fi classic "Metropolis" screening in Jackson

The Crossroads Film Society is hosting a public screening of the classic 1927 German silent film Metropolis on January 29 at Jackson State University. Considered a landmark film in cinematic history and in science-fiction film, Metropolis will screen at 7:30 pm in the Campus Union Building theater at JSU. Tickets are $5 each for Crossroads members and college students with ID and $7 for the general public.

Crossroads screens "Metropolis" in collaboration with JSU's International Week program, designed to celebrate the diversity of Jackson State University through a week-long festival of international activities. The film's German origin and its influence on the later spread of international film culture make it a prime ambassador for promoting "global awareness of the many cultures through educational and entertaining activities."

Mississippi native James Earl Jones honored with SAG Lifetime Achievement Award

James Earl Jones, born in rural Mississippi, will be honored with the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Lifetime Achievement Award during the 15th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards (simulcast live one TNT and TBS at 7 p.m. today).

Jones, who turned 78 last week, recently talked to Frazier Moore of the Associated Press about the larger truths of acting. "What fascinates me is that ever actor is given a charge, a task," he said. "No matter what your motive was in taking the role, even if it's just to pay the bills. You're the only person who will be able to present to an audience what the character is all about! You're the public face of all the other work that's gone into it. Your job is to create a performance that no one else would have thought of." Jones adds, "And that is fun."

"Prom Night in Mississippi" competing at Sundance Film Festival

Last year, a Mississippi film, Ballast (with an all-Mississippi cast even), produced by Lance Hammer and Nina Parikh, won two jury awards at the Sundance Film Festival. This year, Prom Night in Mississippi, directed by Paul Saltzman, competes in the World Documentary Competition at the festival.

NPR interviewed Saltzman and has posted an audio slide show of the discussion.

In addition to Sundance, the film will also be showing at the upcoming Oxford Film Festival in Mississippi.

"Saint Pe' Presents" Film Series at Pi(e) Lounge

 

St. Pe' Films is sponsoring a Film Night every Wednesday at the Pi(e) Lounge at Sal & Mookie's in Fondren.

Each evening will begin at 7 p.m. with a film by a Mississippi artist, then one of the old classic B&W films from the SaintPe' Films 475 film catalog of public domain masters. Independent film makers will be invited to come and show their works, with pre- and post-showing talks.

For the initial kick-off, Edward St. Pe's short film Orbis Romanus will be up on the screen. Edward is giving a talk at Millsaps on Wednesday, Oct. 8, and will arrive at Pi(e) at 9 p.m. for a showing of this—his first film effort. (The 9 p.m. time is for this night only - 7 p.m. will be the usual start time.)

No tickets. No cover. Just great movies and good fun (and the great company of fellow movie lovers).
