Scorsese Will Distribute Restored Films via Internet

 

Martin Scorsese's World Cinema Foundation films are now hitting the Web. The films the foundation restores each year will now be available online through www.theauteurs.com, a Web site that calls itself a “virtual cinematheque.” Many will be free, and soon they will also be available through Netflix and iTunes. Until now, the foundation's work was only on view at the Cannes Film Festival.

On Friday, as part of his announcement of the new program at the festival, Scorsese included a premiere of a restoration of The Red Shoes, the 1948 British film directed by Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger.

King goes multimedia

 

Stephen King has gone multimedia with N., one of the tales in his latest short story collection, Just After Sunset. It was turned into an original Web video series in conjunction with Marvel Comics. The collection has inspired King into thinking about doing a YouTube video for his novel Under the Dome, out later this year.

King told USA Weekend, "But with all of these multimedia things, the story is the story still, the book is the book, and that's the source material. As J.R.R. Tolkien might say, 'That's the one ring.' It rules the other one."

First Feature Film Created Via The Web

 

Massify, the online collaboration site for film makers, recently reached its goal of creating the first ever fan-created film with the completion of Perkin's 14, a horror movie set to premier during Horrorfest III (January 9-15).

MGM to Post Full Films on YouTube

Beginning today, YouTube will show some full-length television shows and films from MGM.

Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios will kick off the partnership by posting episodes of American Gladiators, along with full-length films like Bulletproof Monk and The Magnificent Seven and clips from popular movies like Legally Blonde. These will be free to watch, with ads running alongside the video.

Along with its MGM relationship, YouTube has recently created partnerships with Lionsgate and with CBS, which this month started posting to YouTube full-length episodes of older shows like Star Trek and Beverly Hills 90210.

Netflix to add Starz Web Service

 

Nick Wingfield of the Wall Street Journal reports that Netflix will announce today the addition of Starz to their online movie offerings, expanding their online collection by 2,500 movies, TV shows and concerts. Currently, Netflix has about 12,000 videos available online.

Slacker Uprising released for free online tomorrow

Michael Moore decided to make his new film, Slacker Uprising, available for free to everyone in the United States and Canada. It is the first time ever that a major feature-length film is debuting as a free download on the internet - legally.

The movie takes place in the wake of Fahrenheit 9/11, during the run-up to the 2004 election, as Moore traveled for 42 days across America, visiting 62 cities in a failed attempt to remove George W. Bush from office.

He gives blanket permission to share the movie with your friends, to set up screenings in your communities or theaters, to show it on your campuses - all at no charge.

IMDB now showing full-length movies and TV shows from site - for free!

The Internet Movie Database recently added video footage of movies and TV shows to its site offerings (some full length even). The site offers 6,000 movies and TV shows free of charge from Hulu, CBS, Sony Pictures Television, and hundreds of independent filmmakers. The content will rotate.

Amazon.com, which owns IMDB, hopes the content will drive users to purchasing DVDs or heading to its fee-based Video on Demand service.
